Winchcombe is a market town in Gloucestershire, situated in the Cotswold Hills. It is located about six miles north east of Cheltenham, and about ten miles south of Evesham. The town is of early medieval origin, being a major community in Mercia during Anglo-Saxon times. A castle was built in the town by Empress Matilda in the early 1140s, but it is no longer standing and its exact site is unknown. The town retains much of its medieval layout and features a mixture of timber-framed and Cotswold limestone buildings along the High Street, some of which date back to the 15th century.
