Tamworth is a market town in Staffordshire, situated about 14 miles northeast of Birmingham. It borders Warwickshire to the east and north, and Lichfield to the north, west and southwest. The town is a historic one, and was a principal centre of royal power of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia during the 8th and 9th centuries. The town grew rapidly postwar as it soaked up overspill population from Birmingham and the surrounding West Midlands Conurbation. The town was home to the Reliant Motor Company until they moved to Cannock in 1998. The Snowdome, a prototype real-snow indoor ski slop is in Tamworth, and Drayton Manor Theme Park is about two miles to the south.
