Glossop is a market town in the Borough of High Peak, Derbyshire. It lies about 15 miles east of Manchester and about the same distance north of Buxton. It is between 500 and 1000ft above mean sea level, and is bounded by the Peak District National Park to the north, east and south. Like much of the area around Greater Manchester, Glossop was a mill town with mills built for spinning cotton and carding. Woollen mills arrived in 1819, brought to the town by John Wood of Marsden, and calico was another important product with 2.5million pieces of calico printed in the 1850's. The decline of cotton spinning brought the closure of the town's mills and the town struggled until the start of World War II. There is now a foam factory in the area which provides many jobs.
